What it is

A fee for getting the car ready for delivery: cleaning, inspection, removing the shipping covers.

Do you have to pay it?

Getting a car ready to sell is part of the dealer's normal costs, and so of the price. Ask to remove it.

What to say to the dealer

"Getting the car ready is part of your price. Please remove the prep fee."

Before you sign

Ask for the out-the-door price in writing, with every line itemized. Compare it with other dealers, and don't sign until the buyer's order matches what you agreed.
