The dealer fills the tires with nitrogen instead of regular air and charges for it. Regular air is already about 78% nitrogen.
Do you have to pay it?
No. Consumer Reports lists nitrogen-filled tires as an unnecessary extra and reports dealer charges of up to about $400.
What to say to the dealer
"I don't want the nitrogen. Please remove that charge from the out-the-door price."
Before you sign
Ask for the out-the-door price in writing, with every line itemized. Compare it with other dealers, and don't sign until the buyer's order matches what you agreed.
