What it is

A fee the dealer charges for preparing the sale paperwork.

Do you have to pay it?

The dealer sets it, and some states cap it. Many dealers won't remove it, but you can ask to lower it or to take the same amount off the price.

What to say to the dealer

"The doc fee is high. Can you lower it, or take the same amount off the selling price?"

Before you sign

Ask for the out-the-door price in writing, with every line itemized. Compare it with other dealers, and don't sign until the buyer's order matches what you agreed.
