Common add-ons

Dealers often add items like nitrogen-filled tires, VIN etching, paint sealant, fabric protection and rustproofing. Consumer Reports lists these as unnecessary extras.

Already installed?

You can still ask to remove the charge. If the dealer refuses, ask to lower the selling price by the same amount, or buy elsewhere.

Put it in writing

Ask for an updated buyer's order without the add-ons before you sign.
